PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

Cleveland Public Theatre's Brick City is a nationally-recognized afterschool theatre arts program for children in Cleveland Metropolitan Housing Authority's public housing. Brick City provides opportunities for personal growth, creative expression, enhanced self-esteem, and improved academic, relationship, and communication skills. Participants, aged 8-12, meet three times a week in 12-week structured sessions in the spring and fall. The project culminates in performances of an original play written and performed by the children.

PROJECT OUTCOMES:

Brick City's greatest change occurred in the area of artistic confidence. The youth clearly demonstrated an increased g.html on artistic concepts and self-worth in the arts. Self-esteem also increased as each participant had an opportunity to shine both onsite and at Cleveland Public Theatre before an audience of friends, family, and fellow youth from other centers. Participants also have shown a high level of artistic confidence in terms of traditional theatre performance styles.
